We’ve heard the stories of the rich and famous flying the skies with their pampered pets. From dogs to pigs, luxury airlines have seen it all. But, there’s a growing trend of non-celebs also taking their pets with them when they travel by air. According to Lukas Petrauskas, CCO of KlasJet, a luxury jet charter company, they’re experiencing the trend firsthand, with roughly 12% of all flights having at least one pet on board.
We’ll get back to the trend later, but first, let’s see some celebs and their jet-setting pets.
Kate Beckinsale & Captain Clive
Kate often takes her three furry companions with her when she has to travel. Myf, the Pomeranian, and Willow, one of her Persian cats, tend to play second fiddle to her other Persian, Clive.
It must be said that Clive doesn’t look impressed by this favouritism, even when he lands the dream job of piloting a private plane.
Kate is one of many celebs whose pets are the stars of their social media channels, even if they, like Clive, look like they’d rather be anywhere else but there. Still, she keeps up awareness of pets and their welfare in general by doing things like celebrating National Pets Day with Clive, Willow, and Myf.
Martin Scorsese & Yeti
Martin Scorsese’s micro Pomeranian, Yeti, had a big name to match his larger-than-life personality. Yeti was also a frequent flyer and got to rub shoulders with some of the biggest names in showbiz, including Robert De Niro, or Uncle Bob as Yeti knew him.
Unfortunately, the cute little Pom is no longer with Martin and friends, but you can still see some pics on Instagram, where his bio proudly announces his love for whipped cream.
Lady Gaga & 3 Frenchies
As befitting Lady Gaga’s big stage presence, her three French bulldogs also rock the limelight. Koji, Gustav, and Miss Asia travel the world with Lady Gaga when she goes on extensive tours. They’re often seen chauffeured around town and disembarking planes with Lady Gaga in tow.
Lady Gaga is an animal welfare advocate, particularly when it comes to supporting animal shelters and encouraging people to adopt. Healthwise, Frenchies are notorious for respiratory issues, so Lady Gaga is passionate about raising awareness of common breed-specific problems.
Lady Gaga is also a cat lover and has adopted two FIV+ cats from Coppers Cat Commune.
Mylie Cyrus & Pets Only Cars
Mylie Cyrus is almost as famous for her love of animals as she is for her singing and acting careers. She’s neatly solved the problem of travelling with her menagerie and avoiding hair that goes everywhere by buying her pooches their own car.
She once bought her dogs a £100k Range Rover Sport, where they are welcome to scratch the seats, drool, and generally do as they please (within reason).
She’s also posted pictures of her dog Bean lying on her chest while flying on a private jet.
Lewis Hamilton & Jetsetting Roscoe
F1 racing great, Lewis Hamilton, has been travelling on private jets with his bulldog, Roscoe for six of his championship-winning seasons with Mercedes. Hamilton called him the perfect travel pet and he was a common sight at F1 races with his special paddock pass.
At 12.5 years old, he’s getting on in years, and doesn’t travel with Hamilton as much as he used to, although Hamilton would love for him to make at least one more race at Silverstone. Roscoe is another celeb pet with his own Instagram page and has a very impressive 1.2 million followers.
Taylor Swift & The Feline Travellers 3
Taylor Swift has three well-named cats from inspirational fictional characters: Meredith Grey (Grey’s Anatomy), Olivia Benson ( Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), and Benjamin Button (who ages in reverse). All three cats go everywhere with her (unless it’s to a country with strict quarantine rules), so that means a lot of private jets.
Her cats do more than travel with her. They’ve featured in her music videos, and they share her social media pages. Like any proud parent, she’s even used them in Christmas cards.
The Rise of Private Planes for Pets
While private flights with their pets are still out of reach of the regular person on the street, there is definitely a shift as more pet guardians consider their animals part of the family and not “cargo.” It’s not uncommon for groups of pet guardians to pool their resources and charter a private plane for their collective animals.
The wealthy are also flexing their financial muscles and expecting more from pet travel companies, including customised crates with climate control and chauffeured shuttle services to and from the airport.
There are a few things money can’t buy, however, like shortcuts through quarantine regulations (ask Johnny Depp). Navigating the different rules across different countries is complicated and time-consuming. A good pet travel company will guide you through the process and ensure your pet is always safe and comfortable.
